AI chatbots for Squarespace: what to check before you install one

Before you add an AI chatbot to a Squarespace site, check your plan, code access, training sources, order questions and handoff. A practical checklist.

Start with your plan and code access

Many chat widgets on Squarespace are added through Code Injection, which places a snippet in the site header or footer. Code Injection depends on your Squarespace plan, so check that first. A widget you cannot install is a cost with no benefit.

SuperBot installs on Squarespace through Code Injection and needs a Business plan or higher. Any other site can use one embed snippet instead. Confirm the plan requirement on the vendor's current installation page before you buy, because plan rules change.

Decide where the chat should appear

Code Injection in the header or footer runs on every page. That is fine for a general support bot, but a checkout or account page may need a different approach. Decide which pages the chat should appear on, then check how each tool lets you control that.

Test the chat on a phone as well as a desktop. Check that it does not cover the add-to-cart button, the checkout form or the navigation menu, and that the page still loads quickly with the widget enabled.

Check what the bot can learn from

A useful chatbot learns from your own material: the pages that describe your services, shipping and returns text, FAQs, and any PDF guides you already send customers. Make a list of those sources before you start, and check whether each tool can read them.

Then test one thing carefully. Write a short help article with a phrase that exists nowhere else on your site. Ask the bot that phrase. If it answers and shows the source, the training works. If it guesses, the tool is not grounded in your content.

Be honest about order questions

Customers on Squarespace often ask where their order is. An embed alone usually cannot answer that. SuperBot's order lookups need a supported store connection, and Squarespace is one of the supported platforms. When it is connected, lookups are read-only and check the customer's email before showing order details. The widget on its own does not connect a store's orders.

If order lookups matter to your store, ask each vendor exactly what connection it needs, what it can show and whether it ever changes an order.

Check handoff and reporting

A bot should pass hard questions to a person, with the full conversation attached. Test that the handoff works on a weekend or after hours, because that is when customers get stuck. Look at the reporting next: resolution rate, customer satisfaction, and the questions the bot could not answer are the three numbers that show whether the bot is improving.

SuperBot includes a shared inbox with the transcript, and its analytics report resolution rate, CSAT, sentiment and knowledge gaps. Check that the reports you need exist on the plan you choose.

Check languages and cost

If your customers write in more than one language, check each tool's current language list instead of relying on the homepage. SuperBot answers in 35 languages. Then compare the price on the plan you need. SuperBot's free plan covers 200 conversations a month with no card, Starter is $25 a month for 2,000 conversations, and Pro is $60 a month with unlimited conversations.

A short test plan

  • Install the widget on a staging page or a copy of your site, not the live homepage.
  • Ask 20 real questions, including refunds, shipping times, sizing and one question the bot should refuse.
  • Check the answer, the source and the tone for each one.
  • Test the handoff to a person, and confirm the transcript arrives with it.
  • Turn it on for the whole site only after the test passes.

What to do this week

  • Check your Squarespace plan and whether Code Injection is available on it.
  • List the pages, FAQs and documents the bot should learn from.
  • Write one test article with a unique phrase, and check whether each tool answers from it.
  • Ask each vendor what order connection it needs on Squarespace and what it can show.
  • Run the 20-question test on a staging page and score the answers yourself.
