What is lead qualification?

Lead qualification is the process of deciding how likely a potential customer is to buy, and how soon, based on criteria such as need, budget, timing and fit. It helps sales teams focus on the best opportunities. In chat, a few well-chosen questions during the conversation can qualify a lead before a person gets involved.

Lead qualification, explained

Not every enquiry deserves the same response. A visitor comparing prices for a single item and a company asking about a 200-seat rollout need different handling. Qualification sorts leads so the right ones get fast, personal attention and the rest get useful self-service.

Frameworks such as BANT (budget, authority, need, timeline) are common starting points. In practice, most small businesses need only two or three questions: what the visitor is looking for, roughly when, and something that indicates size or fit, such as number of locations or order volume.

Chat is a natural place to qualify because the questions can be woven into helping. After answering a pricing question, asking “How many team members would use this?” is useful to both sides.

Define what happens next for each outcome: hot leads get a booking link or a same-day follow-up; others get the relevant resources. Qualification that does not change routing is just extra questions.
