The short answer

If your store is your only website and your questions are about products, shipping, returns, sizing and policies, Shopify Inbox is a sensible place to start. It costs nothing on the App Store listing, and its opt-in Inbox agent answers from your catalogue and published store content. If you run more than one site, need content outside your store, or want leads and booking handled in the same tool, compare it with a trained AI support agent before you decide.

What Shopify Inbox does

Shopify's manual says the Inbox agent answers customer questions about products, shipping, returns, sizing and store policies. It draws on your product catalogue, store policies, Knowledge Base content and published storefront content such as pages and blog posts. The agent is opt-in, so you turn it on for the conversations you want it to handle.

Staff can send product links, discount codes and images from Shopify Inbox. Shopify's manual says Inbox connects with customers who visit your online store.

Shopify's listing also says Inbox can personalize replies using a buyer's preferences and purchase history. That is a useful feature for a store that already runs on Shopify.

What a trained AI support agent adds

A trained agent is a different product with a different job. It learns from sources you choose, which can include public URLs, pasted private text, help articles and question-and-answer pairs you write yourself. Its answers can show the source behind them when matched knowledge supports the reply.

SuperBot is one example. It works on Shopify and on other sites you run, including WordPress, Webflow and Wix, from one workspace. It reads store products, stock and orders read-only, and it verifies an order lookup against the customer's email before showing details. It never changes an order. It also captures leads into a built-in CRM, shares booking links for Calendly or Cal.com, and passes conversations to a shared inbox with the transcript attached.

Compare the two on the jobs that matter

  • Price. Shopify Inbox: Free on the App Store listing. Trained AI support agent: Free for 200 conversations a month; Starter $25 a month for 2,000 conversations.
  • Where it runs. Shopify Inbox: Chats with visitors to your Shopify online store. Trained AI support agent: Shopify plus other sites you run, from one workspace.
  • What it learns from. Shopify Inbox: Catalogue, policies, Knowledge Base and published storefront content. Trained AI support agent: Any URL or pasted text you add, help articles, and question-and-answer pairs.
  • Orders. Shopify Inbox: Confirm what the agent shows for a specific order. Trained AI support agent: Read-only lookups verified against the customer's email.
  • Leads and booking. Shopify Inbox: Not in the App Store listing or manual we reviewed. Trained AI support agent: Built-in CRM, Calendly or Cal.com booking.
  • Handoff. Shopify Inbox: Staff reply in Shopify Inbox. Trained AI support agent: Shared inbox with the transcript attached.

Read the table as a guide to the questions to ask, not a final score. The right answer depends on what your customers ask and where they ask it.

When Shopify Inbox is enough

Choose Shopify Inbox if your store answers most questions from its own products and policy pages, if your staff already work in the Shopify admin, and if you do not need leads, bookings or answers from other sites. At zero cost, that is hard to argue with.

When to test a trained agent

Test a trained agent if customers ask about content that lives outside your store, such as a warranty PDF, a partner's help page or a blog that sits on another domain. Test it too if you want leads captured and booked, or if you run a second site that should give the same answers.

How to test it fairly

Run both on the same 20 real questions. Include three that Shopify Inbox should answer well, three about content outside the store, two that need an order lookup, two lead or booking requests, and two questions the bot should refuse or hand over. Score the answers yourself. Then check what happens when the agent cannot answer, because that moment decides whether a visitor buys.

What to do this week

  • List the questions your team answered in the last 30 days, and mark which ones need content from outside your store.
  • Turn on Shopify Inbox's agent for the conversations you choose, following the manual's steps for assigning it to conversations.
  • Run the same 20 questions through a trained agent's trial and score both sets of answers.
  • Write down how each option handles a question it cannot answer, and who receives the chat.
  • Decide based on the gaps you found, not on the price alone, since Shopify Inbox is free and the other option is not.
